Ethiopian Mountain Forest Coffee

Gawi Coffee

A forest-grown coffee shaped by volcanic soils, mountain slopes, honeybees, wild vegetation, and the lush Bonga woodlands.

Rooted in Bonga’s Forest Landscape

While rural-to-urban migration is on the rise in Ethiopia, many Bonga residents have remained connected to the trees that have shaped their livelihoods for decades.

Arabica coffee thrives well in Gawi’s volcanic soils of the forest understory, high on the surrounding mountain slopes. Gawi’s scarlet berries gleam through the canopy in shafts of sunshine.

The lush mountainous area may provide three harvests every year, producing coffees with layered aromas shaped by the surrounding forest.

Honeybees, Forest Plants, and Local Tradition

Honeybees are drawn to the range of vegetation that grows in Gawi’s Bonga woodlands, in addition to the coffee berries, fruits, and spices.

Bordering local farmers are also known to use prayer to entice wild bees to stay in the hives and produce honeycomb. Whether inspired by the surrounding plants or supernatural intervention, the end outcome is exquisite.

A Complex Forest Cup

The complex yet nuanced aromas and flavors of the forests envelop us when we brew and drink this coffee. Honey, jasmine, and berries are predominant on the palate, along with subtler flavors of spice and citrus.
